Latest inspection
At its last full inspection (December 2024; report published March 2025), inspectors found outcomes for prisoners were reasonably good for purposeful activity and preparation for release; good for safety and respect. It held 753 people at the time, against an operational capacity of 753.
Inspectors found Stafford calm, clean and well led, with education Ofsted rated well above the norm. Their main worry was that many officers chose not to learn what crimes the men had committed.
The inspectorate's report on HMP Stafford, published in May 2020, called it a very good inspection, but warned that safety owed much to a calm, ageing population rather than to the prison's own work.
