Latest inspection
At its last full inspection (August 2024; report published October 2024), inspectors found outcomes for women were reasonably good for purposeful activity; good for safety, respect and preparation for release. It held 313 women at the time, against an operational capacity of 340.
The Staffordshire women's prison scored good for safety, respect and release planning, but inspectors criticised cancelled rebuilding plans and needless limits on time outdoors.
The inspectorate's report on HMP/YOI Drake Hall, published in May 2020, praised a strong community ethos and improved health care, but found drugs too easily available and two units unfit for purpose.
