Latest inspection
At its last full inspection (May 2025; report published August 2025), inspectors found outcomes for prisoners were good for safety, respect, purposeful activity and preparation for release. It held 274 people at the time, against an operational capacity of 276. HMP Usk and HMP & YOI Prescoed are run together and inspected in a single report, but graded separately.
Inspectors found the two Monmouthshire prisons safe and settled, with strong relationships between staff and prisoners, though Prescoed's open prison left some men underoccupied and waiting too long for temporary release.
An inspection report published in October 2021 found HMP Usk and HMP & YOI Prescoed continuing to deliver strong outcomes, with good grades for safety and respect despite the pandemic.
