Latest inspection
At its last full inspection (March 2023; report published June 2023), inspectors found outcomes for prisoners were not sufficiently good for purposeful activity; reasonably good for safety and rehabilitation and release planning; good for respect. It held 1,160 people at the time, against an operational capacity of 1,179.
Healthy prison tests: inspectors grade four areas from 1 (poor) to 4 (good).

Three years after poor results across the board, the North East prison earned a good grade for respect. Inspectors still found too little constructive activity, inadequate food and overcrowded cells.
The inspectorate's report on the Stockton category C prison, published in June 2020, judged outcomes not sufficiently good in all four areas and blamed poor relationships and staff indifference.
